CITSEE staff publications in 2011

Staff publications

In 2011 CITSEE research fellows and associated scholars produced 18 working papers, including 7 case studies on citizenship regimes in the states that emerged after the break up of Yugoslavia (which are available for free download on the CITSEE website). In an attempt to provide new original analysis of the ever-changing post-Yugoslav citizenship regimes by placing them in a wider political and societal context, CITSEE researchers prepared comprehensive case studies that will be published in a special issue of the Citizenship studies journal (forthcoming June 2012).

Apart from this, the CITSEE team, which includes researchers based at the University of Edinburgh (Jo Shaw, Igor Stiks, Dejan Stjepanovic, Nick Holdstock and Gezim Krasniqi) as well as associated researchers based elsewhere (Jelena Dzankic, Jelena Vasiljevic, Ljubica Spaskovska, Tomaz Dezelan, Viktor Koska, Eldar Sarajlic, Slobodan Karamanic, Simonida Kacarska, Davor Marko, Natasa Pantic and Marko Zilovic), have published a substantial amount of academic work in 2011, including books, edited volumes, journal articles, research analyses and policy papers.

To begin with books, Jo Shaw edited a book with Neil Walker and Stephan Tierney on Europe’s Constitutional Mosaic. Associate researchers Davor Marko and Eldar Sarajlic also co-edited a book (State or Nation? The Challenges of Political Transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina) on the challenges of political transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Nick Holdstock, on the other hand, published a book (The Tree that Bleeds) on the political, economic and religious The tree that bleeds.jpgsources of conflict between the Uighurs (an ethnic minority in western China) and the Han (the ethnic majority in China).

As far as journal articles are concerned, Jo Shaw, Igor Stiks and Eldar Sarajlic had their articles published in a special issue of the journal Transitions, entitled From Peace to Shared Political Identities: Exploring Pathways in Contemporary Bosnia. Stiks also published an article in the latest issue of the EUISS Chaillot Papers entitled The Western Balkans and the EU: ‘the hour of Europe, edited by Jacques Rupnik. Likewise, Ljubica Spaskovska and Gezim Krasniqi contributed to a special issue of the journal East Central Europe on countercultures in East Central Europe (1960–1989). Marko Zilovic published an article on war and state building in the former Yugoslavia in the Western Balkan Security Observer. Simonida Kacarska had her pieces  on civil society in Macedonia, as well as on EU accession and minority policies, published in Civil Practices and Idee Magazine respectively. In the same vein, Davor Marko published two articles on media and politics in Status and CEU Political Science Journal. Finally, Natasa Pantic  coauthored a chapter  on teacher educators in five Western Balkan countries in the Comparative Education Review journal.

As for book chapters, Jo Shaw published three chapters in edited volumes; one on citizenship and political participation in the book Immigration and the Irish Experience of European and Global Social Transformation, one on citizenship regimes in the new states of South Eastern Europe in Europe's Constitutional Mosaic, and finally, a chapter on  contrasting dynamics at the interface of integration and constitutionalism in The Evolution of EU Law. Jelena Dzankic contributed a chapter on Montenegro’s long drive down the welfare road to Political Transformations: Welfare States in Transition. Davor Marko wrote a chapter on borders between Islam and other faiths as defined by the media in Spaces and Borders. Young Researchers about Religion in Central and Eastern Europe. Last but not least, Slobodan Karamanic coauthored a chapter on the political iconography of post-socialist Serbia published in Audiovisual Media and Identity in Southeastern Europe.

In addition to the above-mentioned works, many CITSEE researchers also significantly contributed with their op-ed commentaries, stories, studies, blogs, and photo reportages to this web magazine.
